Who am I? Hello my name is Ana!

Allow me to introduce myself.

I am 60 years young. I was born in the Dominican Republic; my parents moved our family to Puerto Rico and a few years later to New York. As a first generational immigrant, Spanish is my first language and I am fully bi-lingual.

I graduated High School when I was 16 years old and was the first female in my family to go away to college.

At the age of 18 I became a US Citizen. I come from a large family; I have four brothers and one sister. I live in Miami, Florida since 1992 and my parents and siblings are still residing in the state of New York. I have a Master’s Degree in Education, and for the past 17 years have been working a Program Manager for The Trust.

Why wigs? At the age of 40, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder, known as Sjogren’s Syndrome. It causes inflammation and many other dysfunctionalities such as, muscles and joint aches, burning pins and needles on my left thigh, dry eyes, dental issues and constant fatigue. In essence, my immune system is constantly on overdrive and instead of protecting the body from infection or illness, it reacts abnormally by attacking my body’s healthy cells and tissues. The symptoms never go away, thus I have learned to live with my disorder. Although this is the case, there are flare ups that cause other major health issues.

The latest flareup started in March 2020 during COVID lockdown and it continues to date. During this flareup, my blood pressure is out of control, and my body is releasing dangerously high amounts of protein. My nephrologist has considered putting me on dialysis. The prescribed medications suppress my immune system in order to allow the liver to restore itself. Unfortunately, the medication has lots of side effects, one of which is hair loss. Losing my hair loss has been the most devastating side effect. I am a spiritual woman, and believe that there is a reason for everything, a lesson, and a higher purpose for the trials and tribulations that I must face in my everyday life. Although I must admit at this time I am not 100 % clear on what this all means but I know that it’s through this that positive change will come. After my initial hair loss, it came back fine and very thin with no volume. I was devasted, and boy did it impact my self-esteem! I tried so many things to restore my hair back to what it used to be but nothing help. I took vitamins, got scalp massages, and deep conditioning treatments but nothing helped. I gave up, and tried to convince myself to stop caring. I went to the salon to get highlights and color my thin hair, only to make matters worse.

My hair was not growing, and frail. What to do? I suffered in silence pretending to the world that nothing was going on but, on the inside, I was deeply saddened. All my life my hair had been a source of pride and a deep part of my identity. At this point my disease had completely changed my lifestyle, my self-esteem was at the lowest point one can fathom. One day I saw on QVC the model Iman was showing her wig line. I figured, why not and ordered it. The wig and its cap finally came in. To my dismay, I kept trying to wear that cap but it kept sliding off, so I gave up. This was my first-time wig experience 6 years ago. I had no idea what to do to make this wig my own. I wore her without the cap, took a couple of pictures and back she went into her box. My wig wearing days came and went, all in one day.

This was the case until last year, when I was on Facebook looking through my stories, and I ran into Wigs For Every Women. Heather was sharing her story and having lived that myself I connected with her on a personal level but I was overcome with hope because I was finally seeing a happy woman who overcame hair loss. I started to follow her and watched a couple of live videos; eventually seeing Shannon’s live videos. Both Heather and Shannon’ videos were full of positive energy and the wigs looked so amazing, I got hooked. I truly loved the fact they took the time to show us how to put it on properly. I learned about wig sizing, how to care for it and most importantly about the magic wig bands! I’m excited daily in choosing the wig that best suites my outfits. I bought my first wig and “that’s all she rode”.

The first time I decided to wear my wig out, it was for a friend’s birthday party. I was feeling nervous about it and I kept playing with it. I remember staring at myself in the mirror for a very long time. I just kept second guessing myself. Finally, I worked on my nerves and stepped out of the house, but was over an hour late, and I had to pick up several other ladies who would also attend this party. As each one of them entered the car, they offered multiple complements, it was a show-stopper, and this is how it all began for me. Currently, I own 26 wigs in different styles, colors and lengths (the longest wig I own is Rapunzel).

People ask me all the time, how I am able to wear my wig on a windy day, and I tell them, that’s because Wigs for Every Women taught me. I can now face the world with the same vigor I once use to and once again take pride in how I present myself to the world and myself. I am passionate about this brand of wigs and ready to be your consultant.
